Lunettes
The Wimmera and Mallee are an enormous region in north and western Victoria. The main farming activity in the area broad acre cereal cropping and pasture production for the grazing feed. But the district is also notable for the number and diversity of lakes, swamps and wetlands.
My specific interest in the region centres on landforms north and west of Horsham called the 'Lunettes'. The Lunettes are a collection of 'hills' that have developed over several thousand years. These formations are not the result of geological forces, rather they are soil that has been deposited from massive and ancient wind events.
At different times of day and time of year the clear piercing sun carves beautiful shapes over this landscape. Modern farming machinery cuts through the undulating contours of the Lunettes with ruthless efficiency, creating a cruel geometry that speaks to our power and tyranny over the natural world.
While my attraction to the Lunettes is mainly pictorial [the interplay of light and form] I am also very mindful of their historical and cultural significance. These series of images attempt to convey the expanse and feeling of deep time in this harsh but beautiful environment.
The shots are taken on Nikon D850 with Tamron 70-200 g2 and on Phase One DF+ with Schneider 80mm f2.8 lens and Phase One P45+ back. All images are processed in ACR, Photoshop and Capture One.
